Dame Kelly Holmes

Incredibly Successful Middle Distance Athlete

dame kelly holmes

She was just plain Kelly Holmes when she stood on the track at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, getting ready to run in the 800m and 1500m events. Having won gold in them both, the Olympic speaker became a Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (DBE) and one of the UK’s most recognised and popular sports personalities.

As well as winning both races, Kelly set various British records over 600m, 800m, 1000m and 1500m, some of which she still holds today. A former member of the British Army, this middle distance athlete also won the 1500m at the Commonwealth Games and came second at the European Championships. She also came second and third at the Gothenburg World Championships in 1995, was runner up in the 1500m at the 1998 Commonwealth Games, and in 2000 she won her first Olympic medal (a bronze) in the 800m at the Sydney Games.

In the run-up to the 2004 Olympics, the Olympic speaker came first in the 1500m at the 2002 Commonwealth Games and third the same year in the 800m at the Munich European Championships. In the following year, Kelly won silver medals in the World Indoor Championships 1500m, the World Championships 800m and the World Athletics 800m.

Having won her two Olympic gold medals, Holmes retired from athletics in 2005.
