Olympic legend Sebastian Coe – now The Lord Coe CH KBE – is a name that is forever linked with the very best in British athletics. An incredibly accomplished and in-demand Olympic speaker, he was also instrumental in the highly successful 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics.
Among the key positions that Coe has held in the sport are chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (from 2005 to 2013), chairman of the British Olympic Association, executive chairman of CSM Sports and Entertainment, Ambassador of The London 2012 Olympic Legacy, vice-president of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), and pro-chancellor of Loughborough University.
Other positions have included chairman of The Complete Leisure Group (CLG), director at Chime Communications, non-executive director at the Vitality Health and Life Group of companies, special adviser for Nike International, consultant for Chelsea Football Club and columnist for The Daily Telegraph.
The highly popular Olympic speaker has also been the Tory MP for Falmouth & Camborne between 1992 and 1997 – holding the position of Assistant Whip at the Treasury for a year – been a member of the National Heritage and Employment Committees, and been given the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award.
However, it is his achievements on the track that have guaranteed Sebastian Coe will go down in athletics history and forever have a place in the memories of millions of sports fans. At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, Coe won a gold medal in the 1500m and a silver in the 800m (with his rival Steve Ovett winning the gold). Four years later in Los Angeles, he achieved exactly the same placings – becoming the first man to win consecutive gold medals in the 1500m.
At the European Athletics Championships, Coe also won an 800m gold medal and a 1500m silver in 1986, and an 800m silver and bronze in 1982 and 1978 respectively (Ovett winning the gold in ’78).
