Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean went from being an insurance clerk and a police constable respectively, to wowing the world and becoming genuine Olympic legends in 1984.

Now much sought-after Olympic speakers, the pair achieved perfect 6.0 marks from all judges at the Winter Olympics for their performance of Ravel’s Boléro, an event that has gone down in ice-skating history.

With 16 gold medals to their name, Torvill and Dean have reached the pinnacle of their sport in every major tournament, including the British Championships, The European Championships, The World Championships and, of course, the Winter Olympic Games.

The Olympic speakers’ home town of Nottingham is so proud of the innovative skating duo, that the UK’s National Ice Arena is fronted by Boléro Square and there are streets named after them near the city, these are Torvill Drive which leads on to Dean Close.

Christopher Dean began his ice skating adventure when he won the British Primary Dance Championship in 1972 followed by the British Junior Dance Championship of 1974. Jayne Torvill, on the other hand, began as British Junior Pairs Champion in 1970 and British Senior Pairs Champion in 1971.

Together, Torvill and Dean became British Ice Dance Champions every year from 1978 to 1983 and in 1994; European Ice Dance Champions in 1981, ’82, ’84 and ’94; World Ice Dance Champions from 1981 to 1984; World Professional Ice Dance Champions in 1984, ’85, 1990, ’95 and ’96; and Olympic Ice Dance bronze medalists in 1994; 10 years after their original Olympic triumph.

Since retiring, the Olympic speakers have worked as choreographers and coaches and taken part in many TV shows, including Dancing On Ice and Torvill and Dean’s Dancing On Ice. They have also appeared in pantomime.
