Britain’s Olympic stars nominated for Laureus Awards


Four of Team GB’s athletes from Rio 2016 have been nominated for the prestigious Laureus awards. The ceremony honours remarkable achievements from the last 12 months in the world of sport.

Britain’s most successful ever female Olympian with four gold medals, cyclist Laura Kenny CBE is up for Sportswoman of the year award. Laura had an incredible 2016 winning gold’s in the team pursuit and omnium. She also won two golds in the World Championships claiming the scratch and omnium titles. She is up against American Olympic stars Simone Biles, Allyson Felix and Katie Ledecky as well as German Angelique Kerber and Jamaican Elaine Thompson.

In the men’s category, recently knighted Sir Andy Murray and Sir Mo Farah have been nominated. Murray successfully defended his Olympic gold medal in Rio and won Wimbledon for the second time in his career. He is no stranger to awards and in December he became the first person ever to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award on three occasions. Sir Mo also completed a historic ‘double double’ winning both the 5000m and 10,000m races for the second consecutive Olympics.

Both men are in good company with the other nominees in this category being Usain Bolt, Stephen Curry, LeBron James and Cristiano Ronaldo. There is also British representation in the Comeback of the Year award. Nick Skelton CBE became the oldest British Olympian since 1908 to win a gold medal when aged 58 he was victorious in the Individual Jumping event. This also marked the first individual medal he had won in his career after seven attempts.

The winners will be announced in a ceremony in Monaco on 14th February after members of the Laureus World Sports Academy have had a chance to vote. The current holders of the sportswoman and sportsman awards are tennis stars Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic.
