Olympians Honoured by the Queen

Many of Team GB’s heroes from Rio 2016 have been honoured by the Queen in her New Year’s honours list. The Olympic Games last summer was extremely successful with Team GB achieving 67 medals (27 Gold, 23 Silver and 17 Bronze), the country’s greatest medal haul since 1908.

Mo Farah

There were knighthoods for both Mo Farah and Andy Murray for services to athletics and tennis respectively. Mo Farah completed a historical ‘double double’ in the summer with golds in both the 5000M and 10,000M races. Andy also had a historic year, defending his Olympic Gold from 2012, winning Wimbledon for the second time and climbing to number one in the world rankings.

Katherine Grainger

Katherine Grainger became the first female Olympian to win five medals at five games after achieving a silver in the Double Sculls in Rio and has been given a damehood for her services to rowing. Jessica Ennis-Hill, who announced her retirement from athletics following a silver medal in the Heptathlon in Rio, has also been named a dame.

Jason & Laura Kenny

Cycling was one GB’s strongest disciplines during the games and husband and wife Jason and Laura Kenny have both been given CBE’s. Jason became the most successful British Olympian of all time (alongside Sir Chris Hoy) after winning three golds in Rio for the Team Sprint, Individual Sprint and the Keirin events. Laura became the most successful female British Olympian in history after winning golds in the Team Pursuit and Omnium events.

Kate & Helen Richardson Walsh

They weren’t the only married couple at the games to be honoured as Kate Richardson-Walsh receives an OBE and Helen Richardson-Walsh an MBE after being part of the team that won Great Britain’s first ever hockey gold medal. Two gold medals for gymnast Max Whitlock in the floor and pommel horse events was enough to earn him a MBE. A successful Paralympics for GB saw swimmer Ellie Robinson awarded an MBE after claiming a gold in the 50m butterfly at the age of just 15.
