Richard Hounslow

Slalom canoeist who won silver at the London 2012 Olympics

Slalom canoeist and Olympic speaker Richard Hounslow is probably best known as the former European and World Champion in the C-2 (men’s canoe double) and K-1 (kayak single) categories. However, perhaps more importantly he was the winner of a silver medal at the London 2012 Olympics in the C-2 event, working with David Florence.

Richard’s total medals haul comes to an extremely impressive 19 – as well as the three gold medals, he has won five silvers and 11 bronzes. On top of his Olympic silver, nine of his medals have come in the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships and another nine at the European Championships.

As an Olympic speaker, Richard Hounslow is able to draw upon his experiences at the very top of an incredibly competitive and physically demanding sport. Being a slalom canoeist entails being able to master tricky circuits in a kayak on your own while also being a team player when sharing a canoe with a partner.

Richard is able to portray the benefits of being self-motivated and able to focus and work independently as well as the – perhaps more demanding – need to work with another person as one, each having their own responsibilities but being connected so that their skills complement each other and, should anything go wrong, being able to compensate for each other to achieve the ultimate goal: success.
