Track cyclist and BMXer Shanaze Reade has had a defining career on a bike, and beyond. The two-time Olympic competitor has enjoyed the success of world championships in both her events and even ridden in the Olympic Games for her country, making her one of the most recognisable brits in the sport. From the highs of winning to the lows of crashing out, Shanaze knows first-hand the struggles top-performing athletes face and how to overcome such adversities, ensuring she is a highly impactful speaker at events. Booked to share insights from her career, Shanaze is both inspiring and educational in her approach to facing challenges.
Entering her first Olympic Games as the favourite to win, Shanaze was named as the only female member of Team GB for the Beijing Olympics, competing at the first-ever BMX event in its history. With an established reputation as an international competitor, Shanaze had all eyes on her for the Games. An athlete that isn’t afraid to take risks, Shanaze’s ambitions for first place saw her, unfortunately, crash out after clipping a competitors wheel. Hoping to gain a well deserved Olympic title, four years later at London 2012, Shanaze once again competed for Team GB, this time coming first in a heat, but sadly coming in sixth in the final. Despite not gaining the results she’d worked for, Shanaze developed incredible mental resilience when overcoming the set back of perceived failure, and she explores this further as a speaker.
Incredibly successful in her other cycling pursuits, Shanaze has achieved three World Championship Golds for BMXing and a further two Gold for Women’s World Championship Team Sprint for track cycling. Competing against men for much of her career, Shanaze has established herself as a skilful and talented rider across both disciplines, often beating the males she faces in competition. Her other achievements include first in the British National Team Sprint Championships in 2019, winning British Number 1 in the male 19 and over BMX national series and being named The Sunday Times Young Sportswoman of the Year.
Currently acting as an ambassador for Access Sport, Shanaze is inspiring the next generation to pick up a bike and pursue their dreams. A role model on the sports circuit, Shanaze has battled depression and addiction to succeed in her passion, and as a result, has developed incredible mental resilience. At events, Shanaze speaks about her experiences and how they can support her audiences in developing such qualities as drive and determination.
