The Birmingham Grand Prix this weekend marked Sir Mo Farah’s final ever track race as he claimed victory in the 3000m crossing the line with his trademark mobot celebration. Switching his attention to marathon races his legacy continues and there is a real belief within British athletics that Sir Mo could become Britain’s greatest ever athlete.
He said: “To be honest, to have achieved what I have achieved has been incredible. I never dreamed that I would become a four-time Olympic champion and multiple world champion. I now have to see what I will do on the road. I don’t think I’ll have the same pressure so I’ll go and enjoy it.”
Running started out as a hobby for Sir Mo running cross-country races for his school and he could not have imagined just how successful his career was set to become. As a 23-year-old runner trying to make his way in the sport, he moved in with a group of Kenyan runners.
Their attitude to the sport-inspired Sir Mo to want to be the best, not just in Britain but in the world. In 2006, he won his first-ever medal as a professional, taking silver in the European Cross-Country Championships in Italy. In 2009, he started breaking records, first the British indoor record in the 3000 metres.
As European and World Championship golds began to go his way he began becoming a star in the sport but his fame was about to transcend even more. The London 2012 Olympics was a fantastic event that captured the imagination of the entire country and made some of the British stars into household names.
Sir Mo was certainly one of these athletes who felt the effects of this. Achieving gold in both the 5000 metres and the 10,000 m, becoming the first-ever British athlete to win gold in them, he became a national hero and his mobot celebration became the latest craze. Continuing to dominate the sport he then completed a historic double-double when he successfully defended both of his Olympic titles four years later at Rio 2016.
Now he has retired from track racing he is keen to be a success in marathons and if he can achieve this then he may just go down in history as the best ever.
