Is Tokyo 2020 Olympics The Year Of The Female Athlete?

As some of the best female athletes prepare themselves for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, next year is set to be the year of female empowerment. Though previous games may have focused more on male athletes, Team GB have pledged to send its biggest team overseas, consisting of more women than men.

At present, the current record stands at 371, when Great Britain competed in the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. But, with an estimated 378 athletes primed and ready to go, a new record may be set. Out of the 378, it is predicted that there will be 187 male athletes and a whopping 191 female athletes – in comparison, at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games there were only 44 female athletes.

Great Britain has had a monumentally successful year of sport. With the Lionesses finishing fourth at the 2019 Women’s Football World Cup in France and England achieving second at the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan, Team GB have secured over 70 quote places at next years’ games.

Though England’s Olympic team are making strives to rewrite the rule book, the Paralympics still has some way to go, with a predicted split of 45% female athletes and 55% male athletes. However, this would still be the highest proportion at the Paralympic Games to date.

The Female Athletes To Watch

Dina Asher-Smith

Since the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Qatar, Dina Asher-Smith has become a household name. Regarded as the fastest British woman in recorded history and one of the greatest female athletes in modern history, her passion for running may see her soar to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. With nine first-place titles under her belt, Dina is one to watch.

Lois Toulson

Specialising in diving, Lois Toulson is a 19-year old Olympic gold-medal hopeful. Since debuting at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, she is a promising athlete in the discipline. Lois already has numerous gold medals to her name, ranging from such events as the 2015 Baku European Games to the 2018 Glasgow European Championships. She specialises in the 10-metre platform.

Hollie Arnold

Hollie Arnold is no stranger to the Paralympic stage, having previously competed at the 2008 Beijing Summer Paralympics, the 2012 London Summer Paralympics and the 2016 Rio Summer Paralympics. Though she is yet to reach the podium, her first-place finish at the 2019 Dubai World Para-Athletics Championships may see her join the Team GB Javelin squad next year.
