A Bronze medal winner in rowing at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing, Briton Alastair Mckean is an inspiration to everyone and a Paralympic speaker who never fails to leave his audience informed and entertained. Being a Paralympian, Alastair has spent a lot of his time overcoming adversity and facing challenges. He has risen to every challenge put in front of him and is an inspiring figure for many people with disabilities across the world.
Before being a Paralympic medallist, Alastair won various junior and junior-senior coastal titles but a serious road accident ended that phase of his career. Six years later, he was back in the winning seat, rowing to a gold medal in the LTA (legs, trunk and arms) coxed four at the World Rowing Championships in Japan and repeating the feat the following year at the World Rowing Championships in Eton, England. A year later and Alastair had a silver medal to add to his collection. He has excelled throughout his sporting career and is considered one of Great Britain’s greatest ever Paralympic rowers.
Alastair is a Paralympic speaker in more ways than one – he can often be seen in schools helping youngsters out with their fitness and generally promoting the benefits of rowing and what a great sport it can be. On top of that, Alastair is a fully qualified teacher and has taught the subjects of history and geography at Canterbury High School.
In his spare time, Mckean can be found instructing students at the King’s School Canterbury and the University of Kent how to row. Always keen to share his expertise and his life experiences, Alastair Mckean travels around the country delighting audiences of many types and sizes with his truly inspirational story.
