Biography

With a career like Darren’s, it is no surprise that he is highly regarded as a multi-faceted, multi-talented athlete and coach. As an Olympic and motivational speaker, Darren can discuss more than just competing. After a bleed on the brain put his life at risk, Darren had to fight to survive, using the ideology “as long as I can breathe I can fight. I will fight. I won’t quit”, to get through. In his motivational speeches, Darren uses his experience to change the perspective of the audience, realigning their priorities as he did in 2018.

In the World Championships, Darren won a bronze medal in 1997 and a silver in 1999 in the relay, as well as another bronze in 2003 in the 100m. In the European Championships, he managed gold medals in 1998 in the 100m and the relay and in 2006 in the relay. He also won a 100m silver medal in 2002.

In the Commonwealth Games, the Olympic speaker won 4 x 100m relay golds in 1998 and 2002, the same year that he also got a bronze medal in the 200m. Darren also played professional football for two years, with Weymouth and Newport the two teams benefiting from his talent.

Retiring in 2006 while still at the top of his game, Darren has worked with disadvantaged young people, using his motivational approach to encourage them to embrace opportunities. He has also helped professional footballers to learn how to use their speed effectively on the pitch – these include Andre Shevchenko, Mark Cueto and Toby Flood. Finally, Campbell has headed up several athletics-related TV programmes, formed a business partnership with Linford Christie and set up his own company called Pro Athlete Supplementation.
