Biography

Dean retrained for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and, despite being new to the sport, his team finished in sixth place at the 2008 Italy British Bobsleigh Championships. In his last competitive appearance on the track, Dean tore a muscle in his groin after completing just the second part of the decathlon, so he was unable to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

At the time, Dean was heartbroken, telling the media: “My heart is there, my mind is there but my body has finally given in.” Dean uses this moment in his speeches to inspire resilience within his guests, taking influence from his own life. As an expert in overcoming adversity, Dean is an invaluable mentor.

However, nothing can take away the Olympic speaker’s impressive success in the World Championships, where he won a silver medal in 1999 and a bronze medal in 2001. At the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, Dean finally got the reward his efforts had richly deserved – a much-coveted gold medal. Describing his career as “an amazing journey”, Dean says he has given 100% to the sport and has worn his ‘Great Britain’ vest with pride. Since retiring, he has spent time commentating for Channel 4, the BBC and Eurosport and is now an advocate for men’s mental health.
