Biography

Two years later he won the Olympic Trials and placed fifth in the Los Angeles Olympic Games. The Olympic speaker’s time of 3:36.06 was the fastest run by an American in the Olympic final until the 2012 Games. As a speaker, Jim often discusses the importance of achieving goals, just like he did to qualify for his home Olympic Games.

Jim often says that his most memorable success came at the World Championships in Rome 1987 over 1500m where he won a bronze medal. Jim then went on to win the Silver Medal at the 1987 Pan American Games in Indianapolis. In 1992 Jim won the US Olympic trials 1500 metres in New Orleans ahead of Steve Holman to qualify for the Olympic Games in Barcelona, where he came eighth. Four years later he competed in the Olympic 5000m competition in Atlanta, where he was a semi-finalist.

Following retirement, Jim was the head coach of men and women cross-country and track and field at the University of Chicago from 1997 to 2001. From 2001 to 2005, the Olympic speaker was the head women’s cross-country coach/assistant track and field coach at Vanderbilt University. Having spent time coaching, Jim is considered an expert in topics such as teamwork and leadership, he reflects on the importance of these two topics throughout his time as an Olympic speaker.

He also coaches individuals and high school groups during the off-season and gives motivational speeches and coaching clinics. Jim is continuing to change the face of athletics within America and is widely regarded as one of the most influential coaches in the country. As a speaker, he uses his past experiences to discuss business-related topics such as achieving goals.

Client Feedback

Wisconsin Track Coaches Association

"

"I am a veteran coach of 34 years and have heard some of the best coaches in the country over my career. I wanted to tell you Jim is one of the best, if not the best, clinicians we have ever had. He put his talk in an understandable and progressive format that was easy for both the experienced and novice coach to understand. He backed up his training philosophy with stories of his personal experiences. He has the same passion as a clinician as he has in both his competition and coaching careers."
