This time it was the 400m which Katharine completed in 49.59s, placing her third on the UK’s all-time fastest list for that distance. Having been a huge talent from an early age, Merry has spent large parts of her career within the media where she has had to deal with pressure and deal with being under the spotlight. Unfortunately, Katharine’s talent has never been fully reflected in her Olympic performances, with her winning a bronze at the 2000 Sydney Games in the 400m – even though it was a lifetime best for her.
However, at five separate Under-20 Championships Katharine won five medals, including a 200m gold medal in 1993 at the European Junior Championships. Having not fulfilled her potential, Merry has still been an influential member of society in other forms as she creates compelling speeches which inspire and motivate her audiences in abundance.
After losing a continuous battle against a bone spur growth on her right heel, Katharine Merry retired from athletics and forged a new career as an Olympic speaker. She also became a regular on TV and radio, commentating on several Olympic and Paralympic Games, Commonwealth Games and European Championships. Katharine has also appeared on such programmes as Celebrity Mastermind and A Question of Sport. Being a regular on TV has allowed Katharine to gain vital presenting skills which enhance her reputation as a speaker. She has a wonderful personality, which when coupled with her expert knowledge, makes for a truly amazing speaker.
