Biography

The London 2012 Olympic Games gave Blair his first chance of Olympic success, teaming with Peter Burling for the first time. The pair were the youngest team at the 2012 Olympics, impressively taking home the silver medal for New Zealand. This medal was significant for Blair, achieving his country’s 100th Olympic medal. This win was the start of a very successful winning streak for the pair, being deemed a historic purple patch.

Blair became the first sailor who won four consecutive World Championships in the 49er class. His next victory came in 2015, when he and Peter claimed the accolade of ISAF Rolex World Male Sailors of the Year, rewarding the duo’s hard work and commitment to the sport. Their impressive skill continued to develop, propelling the pair to compete in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Here the pair broke records, claiming the most points at an Olympic Games since the 1968 Olympics with their 43 point margin that saw them win their event and claim gold.

Such a performance saw the pair become steeped in accolades. At the 2016 Halberg Awards, the pair soared to victory, landing the title of New Zealand Sports Team of the Year finally claiming the title after four years of nominations. The accolades did not stop there, with 2017 marking them as New Zealand Order of Merit members in the 2017 New Years Honours.

Blair’s next significant achievement saw him compete in the race of a lifetime. He was able to compete in the Volvo Ocean Race, where he was a hopeful contestant to be the first sailor in history that would claim the esteemed Triple Crown. Unfortunately, he was unable to claim the victory and finished in third position. In 2019 Blair overcame this loss and claimed another gold medal at the 2019 World Championships.

A driven and committed sportsman, Blair has continually strived for success and improvement in his much-loved sport. Born to be on the sea, Blair has consistently dealt with both pressure and adversity in order to continue to follow his dream.
