Jonnie Peacock MBE is an amputee sprinter and a two-time Paralympic Gold medallist who represents Great Britain. He has competed at three different Paralympic Games, achieving a podium position in all three. Peacock was born in 1993 in Cambridge. At the age of 5, Jonnie contracted meningitis which killed the tissue in his right leg and led to amputation below the knee. After being inspired by the Beijing Olympics, Jonnie attended a British Paralympic talent identification day which is where his career began.
Following years of training and competing in various regional events, Jonnie’s first international race came at the Paralympic World Cup in Manchester in May 2012. Later that year, he became the world’s fastest amputee sprinter when he won the US trials with a time of 10.85 seconds over 100m. He then went on to win gold in the 2012 Paralympics in front of a home crowd of 80,000 setting a Paralympic record at the age of 19. His success at the Paralympics led to being appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for his services to athletics. Due to a sore developing on his stump, Jonnie was forced to withdraw from the 2015 World Championships in Doha. However, Jonnie fought back making it back to full fitness in time for the 2016 Paralympics in Rio. He managed to defend his title, winning the second gold of his career with a time of 10.81 seconds, re-setting the world record for the Paralympic 100m event.
As of 2017, Jonnie diversified his career, making regular TV appearances, including becoming the first amputee Paralympian to compete on BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing. Following the Covid-19 pandemic, Jonnie participated in the delayed 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, where he secured a bronze medal in the 100m event and a silver medal as part of the mixed 4 x 100m relay team. Most recently, in 2024, Jonnie added another silver medal to his accomplishments at the Paris Paralympic Games.
Jonnie Peacock went on to take up more TV work appearing in the Netflix documentary ‘Rising Phoenix’ which tells the stories of Paralympians. His own TV series ‘Jonnies Blade Camp’ screened on Channel 4 in which he launches a training camp for five young amputees. Throughout his career, Jonnie has repeatedly overcome adversity and succeeded. He is available now to hire through Olympic Speakers, contact us today!
