Ellie Simmonds is a British swimmer and Olympic Speaker with five Paralympic gold medals and 10 world records to her name. She shot to fame when she won her first Paralympic medal at the age just 13 at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, subsequently going on to become the youngest winner of the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year in 2008 and then the youngest recipient of an MBE at the age of 14 years.
Eleanor, who has Achondroplasia dwarfism, started swimming at the age of five and started competing against able-bodied children at the age of eight. At 10 years old, Ellie’s talent was spotted at a disability event and she was entered onto the British Swimming talent programme. Since her meteoric rise into the public eye in Beijing, Ellie has continued to dominate her sport, winning 13 World titles, 10 European titles and breaking eight world records along the way.
The Olympic Speaker then competed at the London 2012 Paralympics, winning four medals, including two golds, and broke a further two world records in the S6 400m Freestyle and SM6 200m Individual Medley, while also clinching silver in the S6 100m Freestyle and Bronze in the S6 50m Freestyle.
Presented with an MBE for her services to sport, Ellie is a truly remarkable and dedicated individual. In 2024, Ellie made her Channel 4 debut as part of the coverage team for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Her ambition and determination to succeed have never been hampered by her disability, and she continues to be an icon to young people across Britain. As a patron of the Dwarf Sports Association UK and a Girlguiding leader, she is the perfect speaker for school events and charity fundraisers, inspiring self-acceptance.
