Biography

Katherine first won silver at Sydney Olympic Games in 2000 in the woman’s quadruple sculls with Guin Batten, Gillian Lindsay and Miriam Batten losing to a German team. Four years later in Athens, she won silver again when she took part in the coxless pairs with Cath Bishop losing to Georgeta Damian and Viorica Susanu of Romania.

The Olympic speaker returned to the quadruple sculls in Beijing 2008 when she won her third silver with Annie Vernon, Debbie Flood and Frances Houghton narrowly losing to China after taking the lead for a large part of the race.

Having been so close to an Olympic gold medal on three occasions, Grainger has had to deal with setbacks and in particular the disappointment of coming so close to achieving goals but slightly falling short. At the 2012 London Olympic Games, Katherine and Anna Watkins broke the Olympic record as they qualified for the Double Sculls final – they then went on to win the gold medal and Grainger finally won her long-anticipated gold medal at an Olympic Games. Currently, she serves as Chair of UK Sport, overseeing Team GB's success at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

In 2016, Grainger won her fifth Olympic medal, this time taking a silver medal in the double sculls. With five Olympic medals, she is one of Great Britain’s most decorated female Olympian sportstars. As an Olympic speaker, Katherine discusses not only her time at the Games but also the intensive training required to succeed in such a high endurance sport. A truly inspiring figure, Grainger uses her experiences and knowledge to inspire audiences across the world.

Her willingness to spend time answering questions, having her photo taken and sharing her gold medal with the audience was terrific.
