Kelly started her early career as a professional runner but changed paths when she joined the British Army aged 18. As an HGV driver and a Physical Training Instructor, she developed skills in mental resilience and perseverance, integral to the military. Contrary to popular belief, Kelly’s MBE was from her services to the military and not her achievements in sport, along with her being appointed Honorary Colonel. Though she was plagued with injuries that damaged her mental health, this exceptional runner went on to secure two gold medals at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Kelly learnt the importance of giving disadvantaged young people the opportunities they deserve, which is what inspired her to set up the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust.
