Biography

Sir Steve Redgrave is widely regarded as one of Britain’s greatest-ever Olympians, a figure whose dominance in rowing redefined endurance sport at the highest level. Across an extraordinary career, he achieved the unprecedented feat of winning gold medals at five consecutive Olympic Games, a record unmatched in Olympic rowing and unique among male endurance athletes.

Steve's Olympic journey began at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, where he secured gold in the coxed four. He went on to claim gold in the coxless pair at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games and 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, before completing his historic run with victory in the coxless four at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. At Seoul in 1988, he also earned a bronze medal in the coxed pair, underlining his versatility across boat classes.

Beyond the Olympics, Redgrave was a nine-time World Rowing Champion, excelling in the coxed pair, coxless pair and coxless four. He added two World Championship silver medals in 1987 and 1989, along with a bronze in 1990. Earlier in his career, he demonstrated his range by winning three gold medals at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in single sculls, coxless pair and coxed four. His consistency extended to domestic competition, where he competed at 19 Henley Royal Regattas, a benchmark of longevity and elite performance.

Despite his success, Steve's career was defined as much by resilience as by medals. He competed at the highest level while managing ulcerative colitis, diabetes and dyslexia, making his achievements even more remarkable. His impact earned him numerous honours, including being appointed MBE, CBE and later Knight Bachelor for services to rowing. In 2000, he was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year, alongside receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award, and he later won the Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award, becoming a member of the Laureus World Sports Academy.

Following retirement, Steve has remained influential in sport and beyond. He carried the Olympic Torch into the stadium at the 2012 London Olympic Games, served as High-Level Performance Director for the Chinese Rowing Association, and worked as a BBC analyst and presenter. His continued presence, from ambassadorial roles to initiatives like The Coachsters app, reflects a legacy built not only on victory but on enduring contribution to sport.
