The Olympic golds came in the coxed fours in 1984, the coxless pairs in 1988 (with partner Andy Holmes), the coxless pairs in 1992 and 1996 (both with partner Matthew Pinsent), and the coxless fours in 2000. Spending a lot of his time as a speaker, Redgrave often reflects on his sporting success and what it means to be recognised as one of the greats of the Olympic Games. Outside the Olympics, Redgrave has won nine World Championship gold medals– these were won in 1986, 1987, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998 and 1999.
The Olympic speaker – who was awarded an MBE in 1987 which was later upgraded to CBE in 1997 and then knighted four years later – has also won the Henley Royal Regatta diamond sculls on many occasions and the Silver Goblets seven times. At the Commonwealth Games in 1986, Steve came first in the single scull, the coxless pairs and the coxed four. At one stage he even took part in bobsleighing as one of the British team. A truly versatile character, Redgrave often discusses the importance of adaptability and dealing with pressure.
Other interests have seen Redgrave setting up The Steve Redgrave Fund with the stated aim ‘to use the power and inspiration of sport to bring about positive change in the lives of disadvantaged children, young people and their communities’. He was also added to the bill for the "An Evening With..." series during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
The Olympic speaker has also authored several books, including Great Olympic Moments, The Complete Book of Rowing, A Golden Age, You Can Win At Life, Inspired, and Enduring Success – How To Stay At The Top In Business. A truly inspiring figure who has built an incredible legacy for other rowers to build upon, Sir Steve Redgrave CBE provides the most gripping after dinner speeches. "Many, many thanks for a wonderful speech at our Conference dinner on Thursday. You had obviously worked hard to align your words with the theme of our conference. We really appreciate the care and attention you showed to us. You had a remarkable effect on those present. Many, many people wrote that they valued your presentation and for me, personally, it was a highlight and made the hairs on my neck stand up at various points during your talk. It was truly inspirational. For our award winners to be presented with their trophies by our greatest Olympian was remarkable and memorable. One comment from one of the winners best sums up the impact...Sir Steve Redgrave is simply superb and his being there ensured an already fabulous evening became sublime.
