A former officer in the British army, Kriss Akabusi MBE is a retired British track and field athlete who competed in the 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay events. A five-time gold medalist, Akabusi has spent his sporting career achieving goals and maximising success. Perhaps this Olympic speaker’s most famous achievement was crossing the line first in the 1991 World Championships 4 x 400m relay. At the same Tokyo games he also won a bronze medal in the 400m hurdles.
Four years previously, Kriss had won a silver medal in Rome in the relay. Now spending a lot of his time as an Olympic speaker, Akabusi discusses dealing with pressure, a topic he showcased extreme levels of throughout his career. In the Olympic Games, Akabusi’s relay team finished second in Los Angeles in 1984, and in Barcelona eight years later they came third.
At the same games, Kriss won a second bronze medal in the 400m hurdles. However, his greatest successes have come in the European Championships where he has won three gold medals – one in Stuttgart in 1986 in the relay and two in 1990 in the relay and the hurdles. Akabusi also won a 400m hurdles gold at the 1990 Commonwealth Games.
