Biography

Now spending a lot of her time as an Olympic speaker, Adlington often discusses peak performance and maximising success. Rebecca competed in four Olympic finals, winning four medals in total – two gold in Beijing and two bronze in London in front of her home crowd. While she was in Beijing, Adlington also broke a 19-year-old world record in the 800m freestyle. She considers this to be the highlight of her career and to this day she still struggles with the title of the greatest swimmer that Great Britain has ever produced.

Being a regular gold medalist has ensured Adlington has spent a lot of her career being under the spotlight, a topic she feels is vital to discuss and help others come to terms with being under pressure. Inspired by her experience at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Rebecca started up her own Becky Adlington Swim Stars learn-to-swim programme which aims to ensure every UK pupil leaves primary school with the ability to swim 25m.

The Olympic speaker retired from competitive swimming in 2013 and – apart from inspiring and mentoring others – she has appeared on various television shows as a pundit (covering such events as the World Championships and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games). She has also appeared on TV as a celebrity, including a spell on the jungle survival programme I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! A truly inspiring figure, Adlington now spends lots of her time as a speaker where she aims to inspire and motivate her audiences with her experiences and knowledge on a number of topics. Most recently, Rebecca was a BBC commentar for swimming events at the Paris 2024 Olympics - presenting alongside host Clare Balding and former Olympic champion Mark Foster.

Other achievements that Rebecca is proud of include having her local swimming baths – where she spent her early years in the pool – renamed as The Rebecca Adlington Swim Centre. She also became an ambassador for the Encephalitis Society and was awarded an OBE. Having won some of the world’s most prestigious swimming events, Adlington is an expert in dealing with pressure and maximising success.
